Burton Borough student rows towards charity success

Author | 11 May 2026

A Newport student has taken part in a tough fitness challenge to help raise vital charity funds.

Tusker Hanlon, who is in Year 11 at Burton Borough School, joined a 24-hour ‘ergathon’ hosted by CrossFit gym in Telford where teams competed continuously on indoor rowing machines.

The event raised vital funds for two charities making a profound difference to the lives of veterans, emergency service personnel, and their families – REORG and The Thin Blue Line UK.

“It was a demanding test of stamina, teamwork, and mental resilience, with participants pushing themselves to their limits in support of two causes close to the hearts of many in the local community,” said Burton Borough principal Caroline Bedford.

Tusker’s contribution formed part of an astonishing collective total of 5,114,936 metres rowed, a figure that reflects both the scale of the challenge and the determination of everyone involved.

Mrs Bedford said Tusker’s participation stood out not only for its physical intensity but also for the timing, coming during his crucial final year of study as he prepared for his upcoming exams.

“To see Tusker take on such a physically and mentally demanding challenge in his final year, with important examinations approaching, is truly outstanding,” she said.

“His commitment, resilience, and character are something we are incredibly proud of. Well done to everyone involved and for raising money and awareness for these important causes.”

REORG creates safe environments through functional fitness and jiu-jitsu for veterans, military and emergency services personnel to support their physical and mental wellbeing.

The Thin Blue Line UK was founded and is run by serving police officers who understand the unique pressures of frontline policing across the UK. It is committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of officers by providing free, confidential assistance and a range of additional support opportunities.
